DC and AC Response of Resistor, Capacitor and Inductor
DC and AC Response
Resistor, Capacitor and Inductor
In our previous
section, we discussed the fundamentals of resistor, capacitor and inductor. We also
discussed how we measured the resistance of a resistor. Today we will discuss
about the identification of resistor, capacitor and inductor using a ohm meter.
We know that ohm
meter is used to measure the resistance of a resistor. We can also use ohm
meter to identify capacitor and inductor. To understand it , we have to
understand the AC And DC response of a resistor, capacitor and inductor.
Resistor
For resistor, DC
current and voltage are constant with time. AC current and voltage are also constant
and in phase with each other.
Capacitor
For capacitor, initially
when we applied a dc voltage across a capacitor, current is maximum and voltage
is minimum and with time current decreases exponentially and voltage increases exponentially.
And current leads volgate by 90 degree or voltage lags current by 90
degree.

Inductor
For inductor, initially
when we applied a dc voltage across a inductor, voltage is maximum and current
is minimum and with time voltage decreases exponentially and current increases exponentially.
And voltage leads current by 90 degree or current lags voltage by 90 degree.

By knowing this fundamental properties , we can identify resistor , capacitor and inductor using ohm meter.
