DC and AC Response  Resistor, Capacitor and Inductor In our previous section, we discussed the fundamentals of resistor, capacitor and inductor. We also discussed how we measured the resistance of a resistor. Today we will discuss about the identification of resistor, capacitor and inductor using a ohm meter. We know that ohm meter is used to measure the resistance of a resistor. We can also use ohm meter to identify capacitor and inductor. To understand it , we have to understand the AC And DC response of a resistor, capacitor and inductor. Resistor For resistor, DC current and voltage are constant with time. AC current and voltage are also constant and in phase with each other. Capacitor For capacitor, initially when we applied a dc voltage across a capacitor, current is maximum and voltage is minimum and with time current decreases exponentially and voltage increases exponentially. And current leads volgate by   90 degree or voltage lags current by 90 degree.

RC Circuit acts as a Resistor and Capacitor and Common Applications

RC Circuit: When a resistor and a capacitor are connected in series with a ac voltage source, then it is called series RC circuit. It is a first order differential circuit.  In this circuit, the values of R , C and applied voltage are fixed. By varying the frequency of the applied voltage, this RC circuit acts as a resistive circuit and capacitive circuit. Fig : - RC circuit Total impedance of the circuit  Z  = sqr(R 2  + X c 2 ) From the above equation we see that , total impedance of a RC circuit consist of resistance and capacitive reactance. The total impedance changes with frequency. In this section we will discuss, how do we identify resistor, capacitor and inductor using ohmmeter. Before going to discuss, we should kept in mind the following fact. In a circuit, 1. When voltage is maximum, current will be minimum. 2. When current is maximum , voltage will be minimum 3. If resistance is maximum, current will be minimum and voltage will be maximum 4. If resistance is minimum , current will be maximum and voltage will be minimum 5.
